What is the big deal with reality TV?

I'll admit, I like shows like Criss Angel and American Idol. Why? Because they're showing us their talent and at the same time, telling us we can be talented like them! However, some of these shows like Survior and Big Brother just don't make any sense to me. Can someone tell me why people enjoy those shows so much?
