What is the best tripod to get?

I'm looking for a compactable, lightweight tripod for a Nikon D3000 camera to give my boyfriend for Christmas - preferably decently priced (under $100? I'm not sure how tripod prices go...). He says it's a universal fit for tripods. Help!
