Regular Drill or Hammer Drill?

I want to fasten a 1x4x6 piece of wood to a poured concrete wall, so that I can build a shelf off of that wood. I plan to apply an adhesive initially to fasten the wood to the wall and then I'm trying to figure out whether my drill can do the job of fastening the wood with concrete screws or will I need to buy a hammer drill to bore holes into the concrete and then screw the wood into the wall.
